Significance of Rudraksha in Indian Tradition

Rudraksha is a Sanskrit word and a very important part of the Indian tradition. The term is made up of two words, “Rudra” and “Aksa”, which mean Shiva and Teardrops respectively. The seeds of the Rudraksha tree are the beads on a Rudraksha necklace that has multiple spiritual powers. The Rudraksha trees grow on mountains and hilly regions and are mostly found in Nepal, Indonesia, Java, Sumatra, and Myanmar.

Significance of Rudraksha

The ancient Indian scriptures mention Rudraksha many times. Traditionally, the Rudraksha beads are strung together to form a necklace. The number of beads is 108 and an extra bead called “meru”, “bindu” or “guru bead”. The extra bead serves as a balancing power as in its absence a sensitive person might get dizzy owing to the cyclical energy of the necklace.
The Rudraksha beads are strung together with a thread of cotton or silk. Changing the thread every six months is important to prevent the thread from snapping and scattering all 109 beads. A jeweller can string the beads together with copper, gold or silver to increase its value. Although he must be careful not to tie it too tightly as the Rudraksha beads might crack from the excessive pressure.
The Indian tradition allows people to wear the necklace at all times, even when they are showering, except when a person is consuming non-vegetarian food or alcohol. People consider it beneficial to wear the Rudraksha necklace when bathing in cold water.

Benefits of Rudraksha
According to the Indian tradition and beliefs, Rudraksha beads provide support to those who keep travelling all the time. They create a cocoon of the wearer’s energy to help them settle down in a variety of places every day. Hermits and saints who travel from place to place and never rest in the same place twice find great help from the Rudraksha necklace they wear. People who might not be hermits also find it helpful to wear a Rudraksha necklace while travelling.

Hermits living in forests depend on naturally available water sources for survival. They believe that if one holds the Rudraksha beads on a string above the water source, it would turn clockwise if the water was good for drinking. The string would turn counter-clockwise if it was unfit for consumption.

The beads of Rudraksha formed into a necklace have the power to ward off negative energies from the wearer.

Rudraksha Rakhi

Rudraksha beads have been used by people since ancient times. Their most popular use is by stringing the beads together in a necklace and wearing it everywhere. However, modern day applications of Rudraksha have brought the benefits of the sacred seed in other ways. One way people use it now is through a Rudraksha rakhi. On the sacred day of Raksha Bandhan, spiritual energies heighten when sisters tie the Rudraksha rakhi on their brothers’ wristsand also when they send rakhi to India to give more power to their prayers.
